Background on Chinese Dragons, Lions, and other Chinese Mythical Creatures

Chinese lions, dragons and other animals have always been popular subjects for Chinese artists. In Imperial China, lion art and live lions were imported from other parts of Asia to China as gifts for the emperor, but lions are not native to China. During the reign of the Eastern Han Emperor Zhang in AD 87, lions were given as gifts to the Emperor by the king of Parthia, and the central Asian country of Yuezhi. Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, is said to have pointed to Heaven with one hand, and to Earth with another, "roaring like a lion." Chinese stone lions were placed at the entrances of Chinese Imperial palaces as symbols of wisdom, authority, and protection. The dragon and the lion are symbols of Imperial authority, and the stamps or chops Chinese government officials once used for stamps of official documents were sometimes shaped like lion or dragon, or other animal figures.
