About these marble Chinese lions:

These lions were brought to life near Beijing this year for our shops and clients by Mr. Tao, a Chinese master carver who works in a small town a few hours from Beijing. Mr. Tao runs a cooperative of rural stone carvers who produce many of our items with the finest carving, and his shop is where we have some of our finest and most detailed fireplace sets made.

When we traveled to Mr. Tao's stone cutting yard a few hours outside of Beijing late last year to select and commission items in person for our Spring carved stone stock, we were very impressed with his magnificent animals, abstract work, fountains, and large architectural pieces.

Spread out over acres, and hidden in small stucco and brick farm rooms were hundreds of sculptures of all sizes carved from marbles with rich reds, greens, browns, whites. There were also yellow, green, and red sandstone sculptures and architectural pieces with elaborate classical and modern designs. Sitting like jewels on top of the rough rocks from production were hundreds of beautiful polished sculptures - fountains, benches, tables, and all kinds of animals. As we toured the work, we noticed his animals have an expressive quality which is rare.

Over a very interesting and beautifully prepared lunch of fried scorpions, chicken and pig lard, Mr. Tao revealed that he is in his early 30s and had been cutting stone for 15 years. His main business for these sculptures is with European clients, so he was excited to work with us to offer these products to ESTATELIIONS clients in the USA at reasonable prices.

My partner Dawn and I looked at detailed models and prototypes of sculptures in his small office, and Mr. Tao had made a few fireplaces and set them up in his outer office from designs we sent previously from the USA. We accepted the fireplaces that had been made, and asked Mr. Tao if there was still time to make a few pairs of Chinese lions that would show his best work to include in our next shipment. He accepted an order for a few pairs in 16" 18" 24" 30" and 36" tall in various colors.

The pairs below are the result - and are among the best smaller lions you will find anywhere - exquisite matching pairs, with detailed deep relief carving in the faces, teeth, claws, and the female's baby lion. Recommended to our clients who want Chinese lions of the highest quality in marble, from an Internationally known fine artist.
